Three days of janitorial duty. I could’ve had something better but it wasn’t the worst that could have been handed down. The only tasks I probably would be doing is washing some windows, maybe mop a floor here and there. I thought these three days would fly by flawlessly so imagine my disappointment when I entered Mr. Bledsoe’s office to see Avery sporting a navy-blue jumpsuit. Mr. Bledsoe sat at his table with his legs crossed on top of it eating a microwave TV dinner. Avery was sprawled on the sofa watching Maury Povich on a fifteen inch CRT television. A metal hangar hung on the top of it with two knobs on the front to adjust the volume and turn the channel.

They ceased laughing and their eyes shifted to me when I walked in.

Mr. Bledsoe cheerfully proclaimed, “Well its mighty fine of you to join us.” He sat up into his chair. It squeaked from the pressure of his weight on the wheels. “I have your uniform right here.”

He reached beneath his desk to retrieve a garment inside of a box. He handed it to me. It was my size. How long were they planning this?

I looked at him in disbelief. “I really have to wear this? Are you serious?”

Avery burst into laughter just as you are not the father echoed on the screen.

Mr. Bledsoe glared at me. “I’m afraid you do. I don’t like it any more than you do but rules are rules.”

I sat in the chair across from his desk. A piece of gray duct tape covering a crack hung loosely on the edge of the desk. I pulled it off and flung it in the trash bin. “But why is it necessary? We are only here for forty minutes.”

He stood.

I eyed him from head to toe examining his attire. Blue trousers and white cotton dress shirt, pretty decent for a janitor.

He answered me before I could ask. “I’m your boss for the next three days. I manage twelve men and women to keep the grounds you walk on clean, habitable and functional. Don’t you think I deserve to dress nice?”

Avery muttered keeping his eyes on the TV. “Just put it on and stop making everything so difficult.”

Mr. Bledsoe sat back at his desk and propped his feet up. He began stuffing his mouth with his food. I turned my nose at mashed potatoes flying out of his mouth as he exploded in laughter at another you-are-not-the-father DNA test. “I need to report everything so don’t make this harder than what it already is.” He said. “You can go to the girl’s locker room next door. Be back in five so we can get to work.”

He coughed and almost choked trying to eat and talk simultaneously. Bits of his food landed on a photo I assumed was his wife because he had his arm wrapped around her shoulder and they were looking lovingly into each other’s eyes.

I couldn’t help but to notice the opened styrofoam box resting next to this photo.
